A progressive course teaching the basic salsa steps and routines. No partner required. Please wear clothing that is easy to move in and shoes, boots or sandals NOT trainers or bulky shoes. A great way to meet new people and make new friends.
An exciting new outdoor walking technique using specially designed walking poles. It burns more calories than normal walking, strengthens the back and arms and releases tension in the neck and shoulders. It`s great fun too!
Belly dancing gives a complete cardiovascular workout and strengthens the abdominal muscles, and is gaining popularity among men and women who want to lose weight. An intense sixty-minute session may burn around 330 calories. Since one focus of belly dancing is to gain strength and flexibility in the abdomen, the dance form is said to be one of the quickest ways to achieve firmness.
Strictly Come Dancing, new Ballroom and Latin class for beginners. Starting from a beginners level, come and learn everything from Cha Cha to Quickstep. Anyone can pick up these steps, its fun and keeps you very fit!
A complete workout to get fit, have fun, and tone up!
Using techniques developed from boxing, boxercise combines the use of both aerobic and anaerobic energy systems with the systematic recruitment of both fast and slow twitch muscle fibres to tone the body.
Where do I go for the classes?
All classes are held in the Well-Being Room on D Floor in the main hospital. This is near to East Block lifts. If you come for a class in the evening then there is a possibility that some doors from the medical school to main hospital may be locked - please check your route and access in advance.
Do I need to book in advance?
Not at the moment. As this is a new service, we don`t know how popular the classes will be until they have run for a while. So, we ask you to just turn up for the session whether you have a free membership card that can be stamped, or whether you are paying. If the number of students begins to exceed capacity then we will develop an online booking system in the future.
What if I can`t get into a class?
If you arrive late the class may already have started or may be at full capacity. Therefore we ask you to arrive in plenty of time. If the number of students begins to exceed capacity then we may have to offer additional classes and/or introduce a booking system. We won`t know this until the classes have been running long enough to judge their popularity.
Can I get a free pass in the future if I didn`t get one this time?
Yes. They will be offered on a first come first served basis every term. So if you want one, register as soon as the registration form goes live each time round!
Can I get a free pass next term if I`ve already had one?
Yes. They will be offered on a first come first served basis irrespective of who held them the previous term.
What if I want to do something but it`s not offered on the timetable?
Tell us. We want to offer a service that you will use so we will accommodate your needs if enough people show an interest.
What if I got a free membership but don`t want it anymore or can`t make any of the classes?
Tell us as soon as possible. This way we can allocate your free sessions to someone else.
Does it matter what course I am on or what I am studying?
No. The scheme is open to all students from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
What if I am a student from Faculty but based at another site?
If you are a student based at another site, you are still welcome to apply for a free membership or attend any of the classes. However, please only apply for the free membership if you are certain you can be at QMC for the classes. This way there will be no wasted memberships.
What if I am from the Faculty but my friend from another Faculty wishes to attend a class?
This service is currently only for healthcare students from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. If the classes are under-subscribed then they may be opened up to other non-healthcare students in the future. However, if classes are full or over-subscribed with students from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences then they will continue to be restricted to this Faculty.
If I have obtained a free membership, do I just turn up to the class?
Yes. Make sure you bring your membership card with you to each class you attend. You will get a set number of free classes and may choose which ones you go to. If you exceed the number of classes eg go to more than you have 'free' access to, then you may still attend them but will have to pay per additional class. The procedure for this is outlined below.
If I do not have a free membership but want to attend a class, where do I pay?
You need to pay for classes in advance at the General Office, in the main hospital entrance on B Floor. This is just along from the main reception desk, just past the security box and opposite the ambulance waiting area. Please let them know that you are a student so you are charged the correct amount. Most of the classes are just £1 and open only to healthcare students. These have been set up especially for you to use. Some of the classes are open to either hospital staff OR students and so may cost a little more (£2-£4). Obviously if you have obtained a free membership for this term then you get a set number of classes free. In this case you can just turn up to the class with your membership card.
