Nottingham University Hospitals plays host to 2012 Roadshow

Issue Date: Monday 3rd July 2006

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust will play host to a sporting star next week when the 2012 Olympic Roadshow bus stops off to visit a ground-breaking workforce fitness programme called Q-Active.

Olympic athlete Jonathan Edwards will be among the VIPs taking a closer look at the Trust's Q-Active initiative - one of the biggest hospital fitness programmes in the country.

Q-Active launched on the Queen's Medical Centre Campus in April and is one of the first dedicated programmes within a UK hospital devoted to removing barriers to participation in exercise and improving the health and wellbeing of staff.

The visit is part of the Roadshow's 3,000 mile UK odyssey delivering news on progress and future plans for the biggest sporting event ever to be staged in Britain.

The Olympic triple jumper will be joining Jack Lemley, chair of the Olympic Delivery Authority, and other invited guests for a tour of Q-Active's Wellbeing Room as part of their whistle-stop tour, understanding potential legacies of 2012.

The Q-Active project received £300,000 from Active England - an investment programme from Sport England and Big Lottery Fund - to facilitate innovative ideas including workplace activities and was set up in response to the Government's 2004 White Paper "Choosing Health".

The visit is part of the Roadshow's 3,000 mile UK odyssey delivering news on progress and future plans for the biggest sporting event ever to be staged in Britain.

Prof Mark Batt, Q-Active Director, said: "The Trust is delighted that the 2012 Roadshow is visiting Q-Active - particularly appropriate as the Trust is also a leading player in the new medical speciality of Sport and Exercise Medicine. We are looking forward to showing the delegation how we are setting a good example by encouraging staff to improve their health and wellbeing. The Games are going to be a huge inspiration to people to take part and get active which is what we're about. We also rely on a lot of volunteers who help to keep Q-Active up and running."

The Wellbeing Room is a converted smoking room in South Block on the Queen's Medical Centre Campus. This was made possible after smoking was banned both inside and outside across both the QMC and City Hospital campuses.

There is an interactive website (www.qactive.co.uk) which enables staff to keep up with the Q-Active programme as it develops over the next two years.
