Active Commuting Facilities for NUH Staff

Pool Bikes

The Trust has purchased bikes for both campuses that will be used as Pool Bikes. Staff can 'lease' a pool bike from the Trust over a short period - maybe to try cycling for the first time or to use whilst your own cycle is 'temporarily out of action'. Further details can be obtained by contacting the Travel Co-ordinator on extension 66759 (QMC) or the Commuter Planning Officer on extension 54704 (City).

Bike to work scheme

The Trust has recently completed a procurement exercise and a new bike purchase scheme will be announced shortly. Watch this space or the Trust briefing for details.

New parking arrangements for rainy days

Even the most ardent cyclists do on occasions have the need to come to work in their cars or really are not too keen on cycling when the 'heavens have opened'. With the new charging structure for car parking, staff with permits are required to pay by direct deduction from salary, a set monthly amount, according to their contract hours.

It was considered by the Trust that such a charging structure would be totally unfair to staff who find themselves in the above category. Therefore an 'occasional users' car park is available on both campuses. Staff who do not wish to bring their cars more than 4 times a month will be eligible for use of this car park, providing they meet the Trust car parking criteria.

The car parks will be on a pay and display basis. Anyone wishing to apply for use of this car park or know more about the procedure should contact 66759 (Queens) 54704 (City).

Bike Mileage

Did you know that you can claim mileage for any business trips that you do on your bike, much the same as you do in the car? In 2008 the NHS increased the minimum rate from 6.2p to 10p per mile. It's still not 20p as in the draft NHS Carbon Reduction strategy but it's a start, so it's worth claiming if just to make a point!

For more information on the above or to support Spokes's bike mileage campaign go to www.networks.nhs.uk/networks/page/368
