The 19th annual HPMA Excellence in HRM awards took place at the Royal Garden Hotel, Kensington on Thursday 25 June. Q-active were nominated for the HPMA Excellence in improving employee health and wellbeing award with Yola Booth, Programme Facilitator and Dr Sandra Lee Programme Manager coming home as Runners Up, which is a fantastic achievement given the level of competition.
The Q-active team has established the UK's largest workplace wellness programme, which aims not just to promote the health and physical activity levels of their 20,000 staff and students, but also to change the health culture of the organisation. Using a combination of internal marketing initiatives and educational campaigns, the project empowers staff to look after themselves, as well as others, by promoting physical activity, good nutrition and stress management. Over the last year alone, Q-active has seen more than 3,290 people taking part in activities, welcomed 1,100 new gym users to workplace health and trebled the capacity (and use) of active commuting facilities to the campus.
The judges were impressed with the dynamic approach the team had taken to delivering staffing programmes in the workplace.

Q-Active programme facilitator, Yola Booth, is running the 5K Race for Life in Nottingham on 21st June.
Yola says, "I'm not the best runner in the world and have developed a training plan to help me run the whole race and it would be fantastic if people would be kind enough to sponsor my efforts for such a fantastic cause. My Father-in-law wasn't able to recover from his cancer and my Auntie has just had an operation to remove a cancerous growth from her bowel, so this Charity is very close to my heart. Every pound that can be raised will be used to make a difference, so please give as generously as you can."
Yola would appreciate any encouragement also! If you contact us, we will make sure that Yola receives your messages.

QMC's own Youth Worker, Rachael Ewing, bravely beginning her descent last year.
Last year this now infamous abseil raised almost £25,000 for children and young people with cancer. We had teams dressed up as superheroes and the Telly Tubbies and everyone involved had a great day. This year we are hoping to recreate some of that magic by holding our second, annual abseil from the QMC on 12th July. This hospital is very special to the charity as we have a dedicated social care team based there who help families in and around the Nottinghamshire area who have a child with cancer. Do your bit for those families by taking part. It's £15 to register and £100 minimum sponsorship.

Just wanted to let you know that I have been attending training stations on a Wednesday for over a month now and think it's absolutely brilliant!
Anne is a fantastic instructor who manages to introduce new material into each session, making the session fun and interesting. In addition, Anne is so aware of your individual needs that often it feels like a personal training session. I feel that my personal fitness has improved tremendously; I've lost some weight and feel energised.
I think that Q-Active needs to promote this group, so that more people come along. Training Stations helps with all areas of the body and Anne is great at ensuring that everyone can join in whatever their level of fitness. I would not hesitate in recommending this session to anyone!
Many thanks,
David Charnock (Lecturer - The University of Nottingham)
If you'd like to give this 60 minute circuit style session a try, which takes place each Wednesday at 16:45 in the Wellbeing Room, book online now! The session costs just £4.00 for staff (£3.00 for Premier Members) and £2.00 for students. Space is limited so book early to avoid disappointment.
Q-Active are also always looking for your feedback about what we're doing well, what we could improve, and any suggestions you might have. If you have a story to tell that you think might inspire others, we'd love to hear from you too. Contact us.

Christmas will soon be with us again, and Q-Active activities will be stopping on 19th December for the period. That leaves you with a month to prepare your body for the Christmas onslaught.
Q-Active is running activities at both the QMC and City Campus. At the QMC, there are 14 classes running including Training Stations led by Ann, Stretch and Relax led by Yola, as well as classics like Yoga led by Mary and Salsa led by Dawn. At the City Campus, there are 5 classes running including Tai Chi led by Bob and Aerobics led by Julie. There are activities in both locations that run during lunchtimes and after traditional working hours, and classes are often slightly less busy in the run up to Christmas so it's a great time to try something new before the crowds join after New Year.
7th May 2008
Q-Active was 2 years old in April, and to celebrate we put on some demonstrations of boxercise, Salsa dancing, belly dancing, plus a range of therapies in the staff restaurant on Tuesday. And on Wednesday we ventured outdoors to the old helipad for a Hulaerobics demo and some Nordic walking to get staff energised before going back to work. Active commuting facilities were also be unveiled with plenty of cycling freebies. Dr Bike came and fixed many poorly bikes so there are many safer cyclists actively commuting to and from QMC Campus now! You can see the photos in the photo gallery.
Q-Active also laid on free Q-Active classes for a week, as well as a new smoothie bar which was such a success with staff and visitors alike that we are hoping to persuade the Trust to let us keep it on a permanent basis. If you liked the smoothie bar, please let us know so that we can pass on your views.
We now have information on how to purchase a bike for travelling to work tax-free! This means that NUH staff can get up to 41% off the price of a retail bike! This scheme is open for enrolment between 22nd September and 31st October.

Q-Active started in April 2006, and sent a questionnaire to all QMC staff asking about your health behaviours, and what you wanted Q-Active to provide for you. Two years later and it's time to evaluate how we've done! Below is a link to the Q-Active Follow-up questionnaire. Please download it, print it out, and then either drop it into the box in the Wellbeing Room or return it to Dr Sandra Lee, D12 Curie Court, QMC. Thanks so much for your time in advance!

Please take 5 minutes of your time to answer the Q-Active Class Survey, about the activity classes that Q-Active runs. It`s open to everyone at the QMC, whether you regularly participate in classes or have never. It will help Q-Active to evaluate which classes are well-received and why, so that we can add new ones that appeal.

Check out the British Heart Foundation`s funky new website encouraging everyone to get your heart pumping hard for 30 minutes every day to reduce your risk of heart disease. The site is full of downloads, videos and guides, including one that I found interesting about how to reduce your salt intake. Apparently the recommended daily intake of salt is just 6g, which is the equivalent of just one level teaspoon. So instead of adding salt to flavour your potatoes and pasta, use spices and herbs instead.
If you`ve seen a great website that you think other people should see, let us know

Belly dancing is back by popular demand, but in a slightly different format. Feedback received from first time attendees at previous classes led us rethink how we offer this dance class.
We are pleased to offer you courses, which will last 4 weeks. Each 4-week course will begin with the basic moves, but to allow avid fans to progress a different style of music will be adopted at the start of each course. Marian Hill will be giving demonstrations in the Restaurant on D Floor, East Block on Wednesday 5th March between 11:30 and 13:30, so we hope to see you there. Marian`s first class will take place on Friday 7th March and place bookings are being taken now.

5K or 10K RUN
Sunday 20th April 2008
Wollaton Park
The Nottingham Marrow Run is back! And it's going to be bigger and better than ever! Last year we raised a massive £4,000 with all your help THANK YOU!
This year however we have our sights sets on even greater things. Our aim is to have at least 700 runners with the hope of raising a whopping £8,000 for the Anthony Nolan Trust.
The run is on Sunday the 20th April 2008 in Wollaton Park. For all you running fanatics there's a 10K course and for those of you who fancy a more relaxed time there is a 5K course. Race entry fee is £10, although if you raise more than £25 through sponsorship you don't have to pay!!
Marrow is a volunteer student organisation based in medical schools across the UK. We work in association with The Anthony Nolan Trust, taking back lives from leukaemia. We recruit new potential bone marrow donors to the national register and raise the charitable funds needed for these lifesaving activities.
Both Marrow and the Anthony Nolan Trust are charities and receive no government funding. It can cost the Trust up to £70 to recruit each donor, tissue-type each sample, and maintain the donor's records. They therefore continually rely on financial support from individuals and companies to continue their life saving work.
If running really isn't your thing we'll be needing a small army of volunteers to help out on the day; marshalling, giving out prizes and a whole host of other jobs!
To find out more, including details of other ways to sign up and help out, and some pictures of last year`s run visit the Marrow Run website.

Premier Membership and Loyalty Scheme8th March 2007
Do you know about the two Q-Active membership schemes? The first is free and a good way for staff to keep in touch with what's going on at Q-Active. Members receive an ID card and enjoy benefits of using the internet forum, regular newsletters, competitions and up-to-date news on events and activities.
There's also a premier membership scheme. As well as the benefits of the free membership, staff can make a yearly payment of £20 (or £10 every six months) to get admission to all Q-Active classes at a discounted price. Premier members will also receive money off Q-Active affiliated classes at the Lenton Centre, including circuit training and power walking, as well as other benefits.
As well as the obvious benefits of getting healthy, there are now even more benefits to Q-Active. We've launched a loyalty scheme aimed at encouraging staff to actively choose healthy options at work - including healthy eating as well as exercise.
Sandra Lee said: "Research has shown that healthy eating is important for optimum productivity in the workplace, and our choices directly impact on the way we feel through the day."
Q-Active has teamed up with Medirest, City Campus Catering and the Lenton Centre to offer staff incentives to be healthier.
Staff will be given a loyalty card, and when they take part in activities such as an exercise class or buy a portion of fruit, they get their loyalty card stamped. Once they've collected enough stamps they will be able to claim a reward, such as 20 points gets a water bottle or a free portion of fruit.

The Trust has joined together with Halfords for a government-backed 'Cycle2Work' scheme that offers money-saving deals for staff on the widest range of bicycles, by using salary conversion. If you join the scheme using salary conversion (where an amount is stopped from your salary each month) then you will incur no tax and National Insurance on the benefit. This means you will save money compared to purchasing a bike outright.
Click for full details about the Cycle2Work scheme. Hurry though, the offer ends by the 23rd of March!

The Q-Active team is raring to go this New Year with a new activity timetable, membership schemes, a loyalty card and close links with the Lenton Centre.
New Activity TimetableThe team has responded to requests and the new activity timetable being launched now includes separate beginner and intermediate classes, and will soon include early morning yoga and even belly dancing.
Belly dancing gives a complete cardiovascular workout and strengthens the abdominal muscles, and is gaining popularity among men and women who want to lose weight. An intense sixty-minute session may burn around 330 calories and since one focus of belly dancing is to gain strength and flexibility in the abdomen, the dance form is said to be one of the quickest ways to achieve firmness.
The team has also introduced two membership schemes. The first is free and a good way for staff to keep in touch with what's going on at Q-Active. Members receive an ID card and enjoy benefits of using the internet forum, regular newsletters, competitions and up-to-date news on events and activities.
There's also a new premier membership scheme. As well as the benefits of the free membership, staff can make a yearly payment of £20 (or £10 every six months) to get admission to all Q-Active classes at a discounted price. Premier members will also receive money off Q-Active affiliated classes at the Lenton Centre, including circuit training and power walking.
Get rewarded for eating and being healthy
As well as the obvious benefits of getting healthy, there are now even more benefits to Q-Active. We've launched a loyalty scheme aimed at encouraging staff to actively choose healthy options at work - including healthy eating as well as exercise.
Sandra Lee said: "Research has shown that healthy eating is important for optimum productivity in the workplace, and our choices directly impact on the way we feel through the day."

Q-Active and The Lenton Centre have developed an exciting new collaboration for 2007. Situated as close as it is to the QMC campus and with gym facilities, fitness activities and a friendly welcome, the Lenton Centre makes a perfect partner for Q-Active and an ideal venue for new Q-Active activities.

It is an exciting new social enterprise run by the people for the people. The gym was the first thing to be reopened and at just £15 per month is the best value gym in town! These include: aerobics, chairobics, Wing Tsun (self defence), Ninjutsu, yoga and even Irish dance!

If we see you taking the stairs instead of the lift, riding your bike to work, coming to a class or even walking around the perimeter, we'll give you a lanyard. However, wearing one means you'll have some explaining to do if we see you taking the lift!
For a water bottle, enroll for six q-active classes and we will give you a water bottle free.
For a t-shirt, enroll as a Q-Activator and devote just half an hour a month promoting the project to your colleagues, coming to meetings and giving feedback.
NUH employees are invited to ditch their cars in favour of a cleaner environment, smaller waistlines and clearer heads next Wednesday in support of Walk on Wednesday (24th May 2006). The event is part of the first ever Greater Nottingham Walk Week (21st - 29th May 2006)
We hope you will walk some of the way to work on this day, and have provided a series of led walks from various points around the city into the QMC and City Campus, which will be sociable, gentle strolls to allow you to meet some new people and burn some calories.
In order to tempt you from your car, Q-Active is even giving away Q-Active goodies and a free breakfast voucher to everyone that takes part! So click here to find out the times and starting points for the walks!

The Launch Week programme of free taster activity classes, allowed many people to try something new. Indeed, the high demand for salsa classes and Nordic walking has meant that Q-Active plans to introduce more lunchtime classes once the activity timetable is revised in 6 weeks time. Remember, Q-Active actively seeks out and acts on your feedback, so let us know what you think of us!
Q-Active has also received favourable reports in the media. We have been featured on television broadcasts of BBC East Midlands Today and Central News, as well as radio broadcasts and in newspaper articles.
do for you?Q-Active is dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of staff at Nottingham University Hospitals. To this end Q-Active is currently improving facilities and creating opportunities at the Queens Medical Centre.
Q-Active has established an activity timetable with classes such as Nordic walking, yoga, and salsa classes. These activities have been tailored where possible to fit in with the working days of staff, with classes arranged at different times each day. The cost of each half-hour class is just £1.50, and if you buy five you get one free!
Since Q-Active actively seeks out your feedback and responds to it, due to popular demand we already plan to increase the number of lunchtime salsa and nordic walking classes in six weeks when the activity timetable is revised.
Q-Active also provides the opportunity to be pampered like you deserve to be, as we have arranged a therapy timetable which also fits in with your working day. Available therapies include facials, massages, and manicures. Our therapists are qualified, and you can see pictures and read their biographies by viewing the therapy timetable.
Q-Active will also be working to integrate itself with the local sports community in Nottingham by promoting local sports clubs. Do you know what dragon boat racing is? There is a dragon boat racing club in Nottingham, and it is having an open day on Sunday 21st May. If you attend a sports club in Nottingham and want us to promote it, let us know.
Q-Active will also be working to provide Nottingham University Hospitals staff with exclusive discounts on both products and memberships to local sports clubs. There is already a 30% online discount available on Raleigh bikes, bike accessories and bike parts.
